Wellbeing

The promotion of wellbeing is central to the Department of Education mission to enable children and young people to achieve their full potential.  Wellbeing promotion is a fundamental focus in our school and we are committed to promoting positive wellbeing throughout our school community.  We understand the importance of maintaining a positive wellbeing and the role it plays in creating an environment where all are healthy, happy and achieve their best.

Wellbeing Week 02/06 - 05/06 2026

Our school celebrated Wellbeing Week from 02/06 - 05/06, a special time dedicated to promoting positive mental health, kindness, friendship, and healthy lifestyles.
Throughout the week, pupils took part in a variety of fun and engaging activities designed to support their wellbeing. These included mindfulness exercises, yoga sessions, outdoor games, creative arts activities, and class discussions about emotions, gratitude, kindness and being happy. Children also enjoyed opportunities to work together, build friendships, and reflect on ways to care for themselves and others.
A highlight of the week was our Homework Bingo, where pupils completed acts of kindness both in school and at home. It was wonderful to see so many thoughtful actions and positive interactions across the school community.
Wellbeing Week reminded us of the importance of looking after our physical, emotional, and social wellbeing. We are proud of the enthusiasm shown by all our pupils and would like to thank our staff and families for their support in making the week such a success. From our Healthy Bakes to our Sports Day, from our Relax Kids Yoga to our Gratitude tile making, from our parachute games to our Daily Walk 'n Talks, not to mention our amazing 'Show and Tell' - Wellbeing Week had it all. Roll on next Year
Together, we continue to foster a happy, caring, and inclusive school environment where every child can thrive.

Mindfulness

Our Junior and Senior Infants took a moment this morning, while relaxing in the sunshine to restore calm and peace to their minds, to reflect on all that is good and to just be.  We started to worry that some had fallen asleep, they were so quiet!

Well Being Week 20th - 24th Oct

Rathcor NS held another very successful Well Being Week just before the mid-term break.  During the week we had various activities and visits to help promote well being in our school.  We had a visit from the local Gardai providing the children with important Safety Advice for Halloween, we had a visit from the new First Division Champions Dundalk FC, we made Gratitude Chains, had Daily Walk and Talks, celebrated past and present students with a visit from the Cooley Kickhams winning U13 girls team, had a positive, mindful visit with Andrea from 'Relax Kids', celebrated our strengths and weaknesses, confirmed our aspirations and discussed our character strengths.  All was finished with  a Fancy Dress Assembly, dancing to songs that make us feel good and excercise for a healthy mind and body.  Check out our gallery below, showcasing another very successful Well Being Week - a big thank you to Ms Sheils and the Well Being Committee for organising.

Well Being Week 22/10/24 - 25/10/24

Over the last couple of years we have run very successful Wellbeing Weeks in which the children and whole school community have participated wholeheartedly in and have given very positive feedback to the school. We are therefore delighted to announce that this year’s first Wellbeing Week took place from Tuesday 22 nd October 2024 until Friday 25th October 2024. .
The aim of the week is to empower children to become active participants in creating, maintaining and boosting positive mental health throughout their lives. For new parents this special week is very much in line with the vision of the Department of Education and Skills that the promotion of wellbeing be at the core of every school as cited in the Wellbeing Policy Statement and Framework for Practice 2018-2023. During this week we had have Thankful Tuesday – we  reflected on all things and people in our lives that we are grateful for.
Wellbeing Wednesday - we thought of things that make us happy and we completed a Wellbeing Profile. Thoughtful Thursday - we  focused on how we can be kind to ourselves and others. We shared random acts of kindness and reflected on the importance of friendship. Fun Fit Friday - we focused on keeping our bodies happy and healthy while having lots of fun at our Halloween inspired activities. We had visits from Pygmy goats, Healthy Bakes, Delicious Soups (made with ingredients grown in our own gardens), Guided Meditations, Yoga, Quizzes, Acts of Kindness, the list is endless.

Pygmy Goat Visit
We had a beautiful visit with some pygmy goats from the local Christmas family farm.  The Christmas family visited the school with their goats and the children learned how animals can heal with our mental and physical well-being, they lent a calming influence on all our students, the children were quiet, gentle, calm and very aware of the animals presence, they treated them with respect and thoughfulness, we would like to thank the Christmas family for this very special visit.

Baking and Cooking
We did some cooking and baking with our students, helping them to understand how eating healthily can help your mind and body to feel better.  It always helps them to appreciate the effort their families go to each day to ensure they are nurtured and cared for.  The healthy treats were really tasty and greatly appreciated by all.
Guided Mediation
Ms. Sheils led the students in a guided mediation session on Wednesday, this proved a great success, allowing the children to calm their thoughts and emotions and just "chill out".  Many thanks to Ms. Sheils for a wonderful initiative which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Even the staff are taking part in Well-Being Week with our Tasty Thursday coffee morning.  Having a chat and a catch up over coffee and pain-au-chocolat will help the staff feel better and work better.
