The ultimate aim of the Travel theme is to increase the number of pupils walking, cycling, scooting, carpooling, using public transport or using park ‘n’ stride instead of the private car on the school run.

Get those runners and hi-vis vests out; Walk To School Week takes place from 13th-17th October. We hope to see as many of you as possible (weather & distance permitting) making the effort to walk to school this week. Let's keep up the great Green Schools effort and leave those cars at home. GREEN FLAG AWARDED
Wednesday 21st May 2025 was such an amazing day for us here in Rathcor N.S., we were presented with The Green Flag for Travel by An Taisce at the National Green Flag Awards Ceremony which took place at the Fairways Hotel, Dundalk. We are so proud, as a school community of all our hard work and achievements. The Green Schools Committee led by Mrs. O'Reilly did an amazing job of leading the project but we could not have achieved our flag without the incredible work of all the children, staff and of course our amazing families here in Rathcor. We are forever grateful for the support and encouragement we receive from our families and the wider school community here in Rathcor. Here are some pictures of the special day.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make our Travel Action Day such a huge success, to all the children who wore their green and blue colours and made the effort to walk, cycle or scoot to school, to our wonderful parents who supported all our initiatives and to Ollan Herr and his wonderful velocycle - the children found this visit by Ollan so informative and engaging.

- To wear green or blue colours on this day or both colours to represent us caring for our lovely planet, Earth and to celebrate our achievements of the previous Green School flags for Litter & Waste, Energy and Water.
- To make a special effort to travel in a green way to school on this day where possible e.g. walking, scooting, cycling, carpooling to school etc.
- To put 1 green, healthy food in your lunch box on this day e.g. grapes/ apples/ lettuce/ pear/ cucumber to name a few.
- To make a special effort on this day to continue with our ‘No Idling’ campaign i.e. Turn off your engine if your vehicle is not moving.

What fantastic news we received here in Rathcor NS this morning, runners up in the An Taisce 'Clean Air Week Name Our Mascot' Competition. This was a national competition so to come runners up is a massive achievement for our school. The children in 1st, 2nd and 3rd class came up with the name "Saoirse" for the Clean Air Week Mascot, the understanding behind their name was that the Clean Air Week Crow should be free from all nasty pollutants in the air that he flies in. Our students continue to achieve great things, we are so proud of you all.
Green Schools - Let's Travel in 'Clean Air'
As part of Clean Air Week we will be joining in on a NASA podcast, learning all about air pollution and ways to make the air we breathe cleaner.
Clean Air Week took place from 25th-29th November. Our students were busy reminding us to check our emissions!
Fantastic news received here in Rathcor NS this morning (Thursday 03rd October), An Taisce Green Schools, have been in touch to inform us that our school has been selected to receive a prize of scooter goodies as a small thank you for our participation in Scoot to School Week back in June. Our students made a fantastic effort to scoot, walk or cycle to school during June and their participation has been rewarded with a parcel of goodies, pictured below with our Green Schools Committee. An Taisce were very impressed with the efforts of our students and their commitment to achieve our next Green Flag. Our school, families and community are working together to bring about positive change in our environment. Well done to all our students, we are extremely proud of you all. “Work hard, be kind, and amazing things will happen.”
Bling Your Boot
In our quest to receive our Travel Flag , we recently held a competition in our school to see who could create a wonderful masterpiece from old shoes and boots. Our shoes and boots walk many miles on our feet and then as they age they are discarded, our students and their families however created wonderful works of art out of their old shoes, check out these beauties!

Big Travel Challenge "Pizza Party"
On Friday 31st May we celebrated our win as ‘Louth County Winner’ in this year’s Big Travel Challenge! A pizza party was held in school for all our students and great fun was had by all. A big thank you to our Green Schools Committee and all our staff, parents and especially our enthusiastic and dedicated pupils who worked so hard in helping us achieve this. A special mention to Turlough and Cormac for getting our school oven ready for use. This oven was donated to us by Carlingford Nursing home and it was fantastic to see the children cooking up a feast with it.

We received our plaque celebrating our achievement as Louth County Winners of the Big Travel Challenge 2024. This was a wonderful achievement by all in the school and a special mention must go to Mrs. O'Reilly, Green Schools Co-Ordinator and our Green Schools Committee. Well Done Everyone!
Be Safe Be Seen
Ciara Brady from RSA kindly donated these "Be Safe Be Seen" bags for our students to use.
Travel Code - "Be Safe be seen"
On a recent walk from our school to local company XOCEAN, our students really showed they commitment to the "Be Safe Be Seen" travel code - everyone of them had their hi-vis vest ready to go, well done students, keep up the good work!
Cycle Safe
Monday 20th May was the last day of the Louth County Council Cycle Safe Course. This course is run by Joeii from On Yer Bike Carlingford in conjunction with Louth County Council and it provided the children with a great opportunity to learn how to cycle safely on our roads. Joeii was a fantastic instructor who gave the children invaluable tips and information to ensure their safety as they cycle on our roads. Attached are pictures of our students receiving their certificates for completing the course

RSA Visit
As part of our work towards our Green Schools Travel Flag, Ciara Brady, Road Safety Promotion Officer from RSA ( Road Safety Authority) came to the school to talk to the children and create awareness about Road Safety. Ciara was very informative and interacted wonderfully with the students, keeping them engaged throughout, our students learned some really important safety lessons from her. Our Green Code For Travel
Our Green Schools Committee has been working on "Our Green Code for Travel" - "Cycle, Carpool and Walk to School, Instead of Burning Fossil Fuel!"over the last couple of weeks. The final result has been designed by Shea Temple and Patrick Craven - well done boys, your wonderful design helps spread our Green Schools message to the wider school community.

Our students and families really embraced WOW Day on 4th October, many walked, cycled and scootered to school. We continue to encourage our students to walk, cycle or scooter to school as much as possible.
